Addressing BLM & Equality Within Nebraska Athletics
"Be The Change you Want To See"
the legacy over
image movement
The Legacy Over Image movement was started by the Minority Student-Athlete Collective (MSAC) in the summer of 2020. This movement was founded by student-athletes here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln that saw the need for improvement in the UNL athletics department.
In an open letter to the university, MSAC states their message and their purpose, the letter states “Here at Nebraska Athletics, we are taught to strive for excellence on the field, in the classroom, and within the community. The events of the past few months have shown that our nation, our communities, and our university have not reached the pinnacle of excellence.”

The letter then outlines the changes they wish to see within the university athletics program. These changes range from more persons of color representation in administration or in coaching positions, to acknowledgment of the prejudiced past of the athletics department. The hope for these requests: “To make Nebraska what Nebraska must become.”

September 15, 2020

MSAC held a rally at UNL's Memorial stadium. This rally was open to all students and faculty on campus, as well as the surrounding community.

Featuring guest speakers like Sam Phillips, a gymnast at the university or Head Husker girls basketball coach Amy Williams, this rally brought awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement as well as MSAC's Legacy Over Image movement.

This rally served as a way for minority student-athletes to talk about their experiences in the athletics department and address the changes they wish to see both on campus and in the community.
