Derrick Walker is a junior on the men’s basketball team here at UNL originally from Kansas City Missouri.
As a member of MSAC, Walker talks about the need for a more understanding and diverse athletics department, and also what it means to him to have that in Nebraska athletics.
“They're starting to take steps and actions toward it (handling prejudice better),” Walker said. “And now with everything going on with the whole social justice and the rallies and all there is, they have been taking steps in the right direction.”
Walker also talked about the importance of minority student-athletes seeing people like them among the staff and coaches.

“Us athletes wanted to see more faces like ours and it’d be really nice to have more diversity among staff,” Walker said.
Within MSAC, the goal has been to elevate athlete voices and give them a platform to raise awareness for their cause and educate others.
“It’s created awareness about social injustices,” Walker said. “We have a voice and black lives matter as much as all lives, we’re just pushing for the same thing the world wants within our community.”
