Emily Cheramie is a senior on the women’s rifle team here at UNL, originally from Georgetown, Kentucky.

While Emily is not a member of MSAC, she is an ally and believes in the group's message. She explained how, growing up in the south, she was exposed to a lot of stereotypes and prejudice and it wasn't until she got to high school that she saw the problems with that way of thinking.

“I was able to meet other people and learn from their experiences and recognize that that was not ok,” Cheramie said. “And I really learned that by talking to people and making friends with people that don't look like me or aren't from the same background.”

Though Cheramie is not a member of the Minority Student-Athlete Collective, she is steadfast in her support of the groups calls for equity within student athletics

“I think as a whole within athletics, there is definitely a problem,” Cheramie said. “Especially what I've seen with upper admin and just kind of pushing MSAC to the side, which is frustrating for me to see, to hear from my friends, it shouldn't be happening.”

A big change Cheramie is hoping to see in athletics is that of the people in staff or coaching positions, citing the discrepancy between the proportion of minority athletes and those in positions of power in the department.

“It’s hard, you know, for other student-athletes when you don't see your representation in the people in power,” Cheramie said. “Because then there's not people you can go to, or trust or have shared experiences with and that's a big problem.”

“I’m happy to play that ally role as much as I can… I always left it open that if they wanted me to say anything at all, I was always, always happy to do it, to call out anyone that i needed to because honestly, I'm not scared of the repercussions. For me, it's worth it because I think it's important.”
