Chelsey Jones is a fifth-year senior track athlete at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, studying sports media communications. Chelsey joined MSAC because she saw the need for change in the athletics department regarding racial equality.
“(MSAC) is a group of minority athletes that are basically just fed up with how people who look like us are being treated and how people don't really care about us, or what's going on with us,” Jones said.
Originally from Mandeville, Louisiana, MSAC has given Jones an opportunity to connect more with her fellow athletes.
“It’s very meaningful to me because I've never really been a part of a group like that,” Jones said. “Growing up I've never been around a lot of different cultured people, I grew up in a majority white city and I went to school with a majority of white people.”
Jones also spoke on how MSAC was necessary because of UNL’s silence surrounding the Black Lives Matter Movement.
“I know they see what’s going on and they know what's going on but they have not shown support to us,” Jones said. “And they’re like, ‘oh as long as you're doing fine at practice you're fine’ and it's like no, I have so much more to live for.”
As one of the organizers of the rally, Jones had hopes that everyone that came to listen to what the athletes needed to say, came with an open mind.
“There’s always two sides to every story, sometimes even three,” Jones said. “I feel a lot of people are closed-minded when it comes to these types of things, especially when they have no experience or it doesn't pertain to them.”
